College Students Frequent Shopping Places In DelhiBy
If there is one thing that Delhi is famous for, its street side shopping. Delhi is also home to hundreds of thousands of college students. The shopping places in Delhi are full of college students, doing what they like best – street side shopping.
Youngsters and shopping
In fact, a survey by ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) reveals that 35% of young people in Delhi and other cities in India such as Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Chennai, spend at least Rs. 5,000 per month on clothes. Of all the young people in the survey, it was found that the Delhi youngsters are the most spendthrift. In fact, 55% of Delhi teens said that they spent over Rs. 5,000 on clothes every month. This is true for middle class kids, just as it is for the rich. Class isn’t a barrier for shopping; Delhi youngsters just like to shop.
65 percent of Delhi youngsters said that they liked shopping with friends while 25 percent admitted to prefer shopping alone. Only 10 percent said that they preferred to shop with a family member or a parent if they go to shopping malls in Delhi.
Delhi college students and shopping
One Delhi college student, Rukhsana Sheikh of Hansraj College in Delhi University said, “I had been planning for quite a while that I will change my entire wardrobe when I go to college. I blew almost `10,000 to buy clothes for college. I knew that all the freshers would be trying their best to look good. So why would I have lagged behind? And I’m still adding to my wardrobe,” That may seem like a lot, but Rukshana isn’t alone – most Delhi students spend tens of thousands on clothes. Indeed, spending on clothes is a habit, an obsession, that young people in Delhi simply cannot get away from.
Well, I don’t know about you, but for most parents, this is shocking! But this makes sense, as a student explained – parents rate clothes and fashion accessories in the basis of price, size or fit, while friends are more concerned about the style, brand value and the coolness factor. That’s why many college students prefer to shop with their friends, not with their parents.
As you would expect, most Delhi youngsters said that they looked towards Bollywood and their favourite stars, cricketers and fashion models for the latest fashion ideas. Many Delhi college students like Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone; they love the way the two Bollywood stars remain stylish even as they dress casually.
Reasons for shopping in street side shops
Most college students prefer to buy clothes in bulk from flea markets or street side shops rather than from branded stores in shopping malls in Delhi. They prefer to buy their favourite fashion accessories from thrift stores and flea markets as well. Also, few students added saying – “we do not have uniform for college and we cannot repeat the same stuff everyday. Hence, we prefer reasonable yet trendy clothes to look good. And street side shopping is the best rather than from shopping malls in Delhi”.
Ayushi Teotia, BCom (Hons) student of Jesus and Mary College explains why: “In school, we used to go out with friends only once in awhile and hence could afford to buy branded stuff every time we shopped. But in college, no one wants to repeat an outfit, and hence, we buy in bulk. And I prefer buying from flea markets as the clothes are cheaper and more outfits can be bought for the same amount without compromising on style and trends.”
