Sports academies in India such as the Bhiwani Boxing Club and Gopichand Badminton Academy are much talked about. They have one goal in mind, which is to make India a sporting superpower. India’s sporting academies play an important role in converting talented youngsters into world class sportsmen and women.

Famous sports academies in India

Sports academies consider every aspect of developing a sports person, not just at improving them physically, but also focus on the mental side of things. Now, more than ever, because of the success of the likes of Saina Nehwal and Abhinav Bindra, parents have been emboldened to enroll their children in some of India’s top sports academies.

  • Bhiwani Boxing Club

    It was the Bhiwani Boxing Club that first popularized the concept of sports academies in India. Started by the former Indian boxer and Sports Authority of India coach Jagdish Singh in the town of Bhiwani, Haryana, the Bhiwani Boxing Club has churned out one champion boxer after another. Vijender Singh is the most successful product of the Bhiwani Boxing Club. He has recently turned into a world-class professional boxer after a successful career as an amateur during which he won the bronze medal for India in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Other successful products of this sports academy include Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar. Bhiwani has now become famous as “Little Cuba” for producing champion boxers with amazing regularity.

  • MRF Pace Foundation

    Cricket may be the most popular sport in India, but Indian cricket suffers from a serious shortage of world class fast bowlers. The MRF Pace Foundation hopes to address that gap. Located in Chennai, the MRF Pace Foundation has the former Australian great Dennis Lillee as one of its chief trainers.

    Some of the great Indian fast bowlers to have emerged from the MRF Pace Foundation include Javagal Srinath, perhaps the fastest bowler ever to have played for India and Zaheer Khan, maybe the most talented fast bowler India has ever had.

    Other notable products of the MRF Pace Foundation who have represented India at the international level include RP Singh, Irfan Pathan, Munaf Patel and the wily medium pacer, Venkatesh Prasad. Australian fast bowlers such as Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson have trained under Dennis Lillee at the institution. McGrath has since taken over as the director of the MRF Pace Foundation.

  • Gopichand Badminton Academy

    Situated in Hyderabad and founded by Pullela Gopichand the winner of the 2001 All England Open badminton, is largely famous for producing Saina Nehwal, perhaps the most successful Indian female sports star.Saina is still in her early 20s and already achieved great success in badminton. She is expected to win laurels for the country in the 2016 Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, later this year.

    Gopichand’s academy has eight badminton courts, a swimming pool, a gym, cafeteria and sleeping accommodations. It has been built at the cost of $2.5 million. Other notable products of the Gopichand Badminton Academy include P V Sindhu, Guru Sai Dutt and Arun Vishnu.

    When one talks about sports academies that have made such a huge difference to Indian sports, it would be unfair not to mention the Sports Authority of India. The Sports Authority of India is India’s oldest sports academy, built in 1984 and has seven regional centres across the country – Bangalore, Sonepat, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Bhopal, Delhi, Mumbai and Imphal.SAI not only trains sportsmen and women in track and field events, it also offers certifications to coaches in physical education, sports and sports medicine. Most of the coaches who train students in the various sports academies in India are certified by the SAI.

  • Mary Kom Boxing Academy

    One sports academy that really deserves a mention is Mary Kom Boxing Academy, started by India’s champion boxer, Mary Kom herself, in her hometown, Imphal.Mary Kom taps crowdfunding for boxing academy a legend in her own right, explains what led her to start this boxing academy: “I have a dream—a dream to create many, much more Mary Koms. I want to build sufficient infrastructure for my boxing academy including separate hostels for men and women, boxing rings, free food, tracksuits, etc. The central government has given land and we have started construction that will be completed this year. But we need to create better infrastructure.”

    Mary used crowdfunding to raise funds for her academy. The government helped as well, and now she is using it as a platform to train several youngsters in the North-East to represent India someday at the highest level.
